Frequently Asked Questions
What is Scoopinion?
Do you like magazines? Reading the best stories across the web? Want to stay on top of articles as they come out and are read by your network? Then Scoopinion is for you.
News stories and blog posts are published constantly, and it's almost impossible to stay on top of all the quality information out there. So Scoopinion does the work for you. Just download the add-on to your browser and Scoopinion will recommend stories from sites you might not generally engage with, and authors you might not interact with, based on your preferences and behaviors. And no "Big Brother" behavior from us; we don't share your personal information or reading preferences with anyone.
What does the Scoopinion add-on for Chrome and Firefox do?
The add-on looks at your browsing activity on well-established sites such as The Guardian and The New York Times - we call this our Whitelist. It then analyzes the way you read stories on these sites and gives each story an automatic rating based on reading behavior. This allows Scoopinion to learn about what kind of stories you like personally. Stories that you enjoyed are recommended to the rest of the community.
What is the Whitelist?
The Scoopinion Whitelist is a hand-picked set of established sites that reliably produce engaging stories. The Scoopinion add-on uses the whitelist to determine if it's ok to include the data from a given article you read in Scoopinion. If the add-on icon in your browser's address bar is blue, you are reading a whitelisted story. If the icon is grey, the add-on is NOT learning about your behavior or saving any of your actions.
You can help to make Scoopinion better by suggesting sites to the whitelist. Just try to make sure that the site fulfills our whitelist guidelines:
- Your friends would not mind seeing content from the site.
- You could show the content of the site to your mother.
- The site has an editor
- The site has feature stories, articles, edited blog posts, informative videos, news or news-related photography.

What kind of information does Scoopinion collect?
Scoopinion gathers your browsing history only on sites that are whitelisted. You can remove articles you have visited easily by clicking the add-on on the top right corner of your browser.
Scoopinion scores the articles anonymously based on how closely you read them. Even though your reading behavior affects the score of the stories you read, you are not publicly connected to any story you read.
Scoopinion collects "votes" on which sites to whitelist based on what domains occur in your browser history. This data is anonymized and cannot be linked to you.
What does Scoopinion do with my information?
We use your reading behavior on whitelisted sites to identify stories worth reading to the community. We receive the right to share the anonymous crowd reading behavior that includes your reading behavior that cannot be linked back to you to authors, researchers and other third parties.
Information that could be linked to you is not handed over to any third parties. You can ask to delete your data at any time by emailing the address below.
What information does Scoopinion gather from my Facebook account?
If you connect your Facebook account with Scoopinion, your profile picture, full name, email address and list of friends are retrieved along with your age and location.
Your picture and name are shown next to your recommendations; your age and location help us determine what kind of stories to recommend to you.
Your email is used to send you the best feature stories by email twice a week - a service you can unsubscribe from with just one click. Other than that, we'll send you any important notifications regarding the service. We try to keep these emails to a minimum.
We will never publish or share your email address or other data. Furthermore, we never ever post to your Facebook wall without your explicit permission.
