Tips on Cleaning a Mattress

I read an article the other day that said your mattress can double its weight in dust mites. That made me think that maybe it would be ok to clean my mattress. I never really thought about cleaning my mattress before but I figure it would be a good idea. Moreover, Mattressify explains about types of mattresses that are dust resistant, I decided to get one for myself as well.

But how do you get these mattresses clean? A mattress is a big item and I don’t think it is a good idea to wash a mattress with water. A mattress does not dry well and it would mold up if it gets wet.

Then I thought about freeze cleaning. Freeze cleaning makes perfect sense to clean a mattress. Mattresses are big and heavy so I don’t want to clean my mattress too much but every so often it is a good idea. Maybe once a year or once every two years will do to clean a mattress. You can think of it as spring cleaning only you do it in the winter when the weather is below freezing.

The main idea in cleaning a mattress is to get the dust and dust mites out. So to freeze clean a mattress will involve taking the mattress outside on a day that it is freezing outside. The colder the better for a good freeze clean. If you can take a mattress outside on a day that is below zero it is best but any day that is below freezing will work to freeze out the dust mites.

To freeze clean a mattress takes the mattress outside on a day that the temperature is below freezing and it is not snowing outside. Put the mattress down in a spot that is clean and won’t harm the mattress. A spot that is dry and doesn’t have snow on it is best. You can’t find a spot that is free of snow you can put down a plastic sheet first. Then just let the mattress sit outside all day long so it gets good and cold and it freezes to the core of the mattress.

After the mattress has been sitting outside all day you can take a bat or a rug beater and beat the mattress to work some of the dust out of the mattress.

After you have beat the dust out of the mattress you can bring the mattress back inside. The mattress is then ready to put back on your bed and you can put the sheets back on it. The mattress may take a while to warm up so you might want to bring the mattress back inside in plenty of time so the mattress can warm up before you go to bed.
