Bowling Lane Cake

It can be difficult to find gifts for some people; it seems they already have everything, but not so with the sports enthusiast. It’s easy to find a gift for a person who loves baseball, football, basketball because there’s a world full of things they would love. That’s especially true if you need a gift for someone in your life who is having a birthday. You’ll have no problem finding a nice gift on any budget for the sports enthusiast. If that person is crazy over bowling there’s a perfect cake for him or her, too – the bowling lane cake. Great for a birthday or celebrating with fellow bowlers, the cake is inexpensive and easy to assemble.

Bake two rectangular cakes from a recipe or boxed mix. After mixing, baking and cooling, the cake is easily turned into a bowling lane. Since the cake is extra long, cover a long cardboard with foil or even gift wrap. Turn the cakes onto the platter and lay one at the end of the other to make the lane.

Turn the platter so that one short side of the cake is facing you. Along the righthand side, trim a piece off the length of the cake, making it a triangle that starts at the top corner of the cake and goes down to the side facing you. (See diagram here). Apply a bit of frosting to the wide end of the cake, cut a piece from each triangle you cut from the sides, and stack them on the sides of the cake to make bowling ball holders.

Create a color of frosting similar to the color of the bowling lanes by mixing 1 ‘¾ cups of white frosting with about 12 drops of yellow food coloring. Mix in a cup of chocolate frosting and frost the entire cake with it – except for the ball racks. Save a quarter-cup of white frosting to frost the tops of the ball racks.

Cut two lengths of fruit leather or Fruit by the Foot to make gutters that go down the sides of the bowling lane. Stand gumballs on the white-frosted ball racks on each wide end of the cake. Cut a piece of black shoestring licorice to make a foul line, across the cake, right in front of the ball racks.

Use chocolate chips to make a lane arrow about a third of the way down the lane. Set bowling pin candles – or even regular birthday cake candles – as the bowling pins.

The unusual bowling cake, of course, is delicious, but it’s more than that. It’s a way to celebrate a birthday with a bowling lover, or to get the gang together to celebrate a recent bowling victory. You’ll love it! For more information about the actual appearance and features of bowling balls, you can visit aboutbowlingballs.com.
